The Sukhoi Su-17 "Fitter" is a very popular and widely sold Soviet variable-sweep wing fighter-bomber. Serving as an evolution of the earlier swept-wing Su-7, the Su-17 added significant payload capacity and vastly improved short-field performance thanks to outer wing panels that sweep back to optimize speed and forward to maximize lift.
Exported heavily under the designations Su-20 and Su-22, this classic Cold War airframe saw combat on almost every continent. Praised for its robust engine and ease of maintenance in tough conditions, the Fitter was made to last longer than its adversaries.
